Puzzles are perfectly Montessori
Puzzles need to be encouraged for children and in fact as a parent or adult you should be doing the puzzles with the child. Piecing puzzles together is a Montessori-aligned activity!
Here are my reasons:
Fine Motor – Puzzles come in all different shapes and sizes. Puzzles for younger children have little knobs to assist the children with pincer grip and helps to fine-tune the small muscles used in typing and handwriting growing up.
Hand-eye coordination:
The larger and smaller pieces help develop and maintain hand-eye coordination and they require the brain and the hands to keep in close communication.
Spatial Awareness is the knowledge of objects in each space. Many future tasks and careers require spatial development, which is best gained in early childhood. Many Montessori primary activities in fact share this aim.
Putting together a puzzle is a challenge and by completing the challenge the child’s confidence is increased which is very rewarding. It also assists with the formulation of problem solving. Puzzles improve memory, teamwork, and attention Span.
Puzzles are good for teamwork and helps with effective communication. You may say my child is only 1 or 2 or 5 or 6. Remember when we apply Montessori, we are teaching the children with the end in sight, this method is helping the child develop into a well-rounded adult and puzzles is but one piece of building a well-rounded child.
